REVIEW: Class of 1999 – chosen by Rudi

Theme: Corporeal Punishment

Overview:

The time is the future and youth gang violence is so high that the areas around some schools have become "free-fire zones", into which not even the police will venture.

When Miles Langfore (Malcolm McDowell), the head of Kennedy High School, decides to take his school back from the gangs, robotics specialist Dr. Robert Forrest (Stacy Keach) provides "tactical education units". These are amazingly human-like androids that have been programmed to teach and are supplied with devastatingly effective solutions to discipline problems. So when the violent, out-of-control students of Kennedy High report for class tomorrow, they're going to get a real education...in staying alive!

Rudi's ramblings:

In a future where kids dress in exactly the same way as they did when the film was made, android teachers are required to keep unruly students under control. These take the form of Pat Kilpat, Pam Grier and John P. Ryan who is fantastic (and smokes a pipe despite being an android). It soon becomes apparent that (surprise, surprise) that they’re just modified battle droids. They soon start to show their true colours with hilarious results: Pam Grier beats the shit out of a student, the fantastic John P. Ryan delivers a double dose of corporeal punishment (the highlight of the film) and Pat Kilpat breaks a punk’s neck.
While watching the film I was puzzled as to why the kids actually attended school seeing at they’re all gang members and carry weapons. Oh well I’m sure there’s a good reason…
It’s also worth mentioning Stacy Keach and his terrific ultra mullet and coloured contact lenses.

Ant's balanced view:

I never realised that corporal punishment could be dished out in such a hiliarious manner, it is in the class of 1999. This film is brilliant asit mixes 80’s shite hilarity with unexpected acts of ridiculous violence, its awesome – just watch it.
